Name: Garth McKinnon
Year: First year, second semester (started attending in January of this year)
AIM/AOL Screename: MewtwoIsReality
Activities: Somewhat member of Spectrum..Don't atend the meettings, cuz of my class times, but I do go to some of the activities when Lisa invites me..
Lecturers/Professors: Emerson, Torre, and Carlton Had Sinners, but I dropped the class..(by the way, I'm a VisCom student)
Anything else: I'm one of the few (well, one of two as far as I know) transgendered students attending NMC at the moment..Been here since January, and I like it so far..The staff has been really accomodating to the fact that I'm transgendered, which I didn't expect at all..I've lived in Michigan most my life, but have also lived in California, Washington, and Florida..After finishing my associate's at NMC, I'm probably gonna leave Traverse City, and not come back, because the area just isn't good for college students..Trying to get a transgender support group going at NMC (if you or someone you know is interested, let me know! e-mail is mewtwodoom@yahoo.com) If you've seen me around campus, I'm the weird looking short guy with lots of piercings with the backpack that says MEWTWO in big letters on it..Hahaha..

I have no social life, as it stands right now, but I'm really hoping that will change as time goes by.

You know, this whole town is run by college students.
At the stores, in restaurants, in the Munson Health Clinic, the hotels:
"Oh, I go to NMC too!"
This is true. Anywhere I go someone from the college works there.

Napoleon Chagnon Speaks on "Political Security in a Time of Warre"

Legendary anthropologist Dr. Napoleon Chagnon will present a lecture and slide show on the primitive rainforest tribe, the Yanomamo people of Venezuela and Brazil, on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium, Dennos Museum Center, Northwestern Michigan College. Titled "Political Security in a Time of Warre," Dr. Chagnon's talk will focus on what the Yanomamo people and their world tell us about human nature. Admission is free.Chagnon's many field trips to the Yanomamo have made him one of the most accomplished anthropological field researchers in the history of modern anthropology. His book "Yanomamo" is in its fifth edition and has been a best-selling text for anthropology courses since its first publication in 1968.

The Yanomamo are a preliterate people who live deep in the rainforest and place a high value on fierceness and bravery. One quarter of the adult males die by warfare, usually in revenge for stealing women.

Dr. Chagnon received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from the University of Michigan. He has taught at the U. of M., Pennsylvania State University, Cambridge University, Northwestern University and, finally, at the University of California at Santa Barbara from which he retired in 1999 as professor emeritus. He now makes his home in Traverse City.
